   金属挤压加工属于压力加工范畴，是金属成形的一种重要方法。
    金属挤压加工就真奉质而言，是用施加外力的方法使处于耐压容器中承受三向压应力状态的金属产生塑性变形，井从一个特设的孔(或间隙)中被挤出，而得到一定截面形状及尺寸拚压制品的压力成形过程。这里所谓的挤压制品，既可以是拚压毛坯—一用于进一步加工，也可以是挤压成品—直接用于工程结构。
    为使金属变形，就要克服金属原子间的结合力，这种结合力就是金属的变形抗力。
    欲使金属通过压力加工达到塑性变形的目的，就必须具备一定的力学条件，使金属在外力作用下克服变形抗力，由弹性变形阶段过渡到塑性变形阶段。
    经过长期的理论研究、科学实验及生产实践证明，压力加工原理中的“单位变形能不变条件，对金属压力加工—包括挤压加工—是符合实际的。
    “单位变形能不变条件”指出:各应力分t对变形金属的单位体积变形功(即单位体积变形能)达到一定值时，该单位体积才能从弹性变形阶段进入塑性变形阶段。也就是说，要使金属产生塑性变形，不仅要使金属具备一定的塑性变形的应力状态，而且还要使应力达到一定的大小。
    其次，金属在外力作用下，变形和应力的近似关系可以用压力加工原理中的“最小阻力定律”来说明，即细果金属在变形过程中，其质点有各种方向移动的可能时，则金属各质点将向阻力最小的方向移动。
总括上述，金属挤压加工应具备如下的三个条件:
(1)使金属处于三向压应力状态;
(2}建立足够的应力，使金属产生塑性变形;
(3)有一个能使金属流出的孔(或间隙)，提供一个阻力最小的方向。
